EPIC recently asked tenants for their views on proposed changes to how we manage unacceptable behaviour. The aim is to make sure everyone can access services while helping to keep tenants, colleagues and contractors safe.
As part of the consultation, EPIC received feedback from one tenant. The feedback raised concerns about the proposed Safety Information Register (SIR), how unacceptable behaviour is identified and whether the policy gave greater weight to protecting staff and contractors. We considered these points as part of the consultation and used them to test the proposed approach.
Subject to Board approval in September, EPIC intends to introduce a new Safety Information Register. The register is designed to alert staff and contractors to potential risks before visiting a property or engaging with an individual where there is evidence of abusive, threatening or other behaviour that may pose a safety concern.
The register will not prevent tenants from accessing services, raising complaints or exercising their rights as customers. Its purpose is to help EPIC balance its duty to provide services with its responsibility to protect the health, safety and wellbeing of staff and contractors.
The consultation highlighted the importance of clear communication and proportionality. EPIC will only consider the use of the Safety Information Register where there is sufficient evidence of risk, with each case assessed individually and reviewed in line with the policy.
